Imagining Monuments, 2019

Transformative wax sculpture

On invitation by Kunsthal Extra City and the Middelheim Museum, Van Looveren thought about what an inclusive monument could look like in the city in 2019. Their answer was a new work consisting of a candle wax cast of their own lower legs and feet, placed at the crossroads of various terms, in the middle of a pedestal. The concepts are determining factors in the identity of people today, but not strictly unchangeable. This fluidity is also contained in the work, which will melt during the presentation and inevitably change shape. So it is also a starting point for further thinking about new forms of monuments, which would no longer be necessary for eternity, but which recognize the constant repositioning and movement of human identity. – Eline Verstegen
